On our first night in the Madagascan capital of Antananarivo, we sat in a chintzy Creole restaurant eating Zebu and red rice in the company of many tribes.

First, there was the host, Paul-France. He’s a French colonial, a tall, totally relaxed man with a laconic view on life. There was David, the guide, an Indonesian-featured man from the riling Merina tribe, who is possessed of a great sense of humour. The band, with their Madagascan zithers, was from another part of the island, where the Betsileo tribe hold sway. And then there were us, from the International Tribe of Tourists…
