Day one

Depart London for your flight to Antananarivo via Paris. Upon arrival here (Tana), you will be met by our local representative and transferred to the Perinet, to Vakona Forest Lodge.

The Perinet Special Reserve is a must for anyone interested in the flora and fauna of the eastern rainforest. The reserve (810 hectares) protects the largest of the lemur family, the Indri. Most people see indris in Perinet, and if you don’t see them you will certainly hear them. Standing about three feet high, with barely visible tails, black and white markings and surprised teddy-bear faces, the indri looks more like a gone-wrong panda than a lemur.

Whilst most lemurs grunt the indri sings, it is an eerie, wailing sound which carries for up to two miles. There are nine different species of lemur in Perinet, although it is unlikely that you will see them all. Most likely you will find the grey bamboo lemur, an avahi, mouse lemurs and greater dwarf lemur. Perinet is also home to a large variety of chameleons, tenrecs, beautiful and varied insects and spiders, and lots of reptiles. It is also a good place for bird watching, with Madagascar green sunbird, cuckoo-rollers, blue pigeons, couas, Madagascar falcon, vasa parrots and many others. Botanists too, will not be disappointed.

Vakona Forest Lodge is a comfortable lodge offering accommodation in twenty-four ensuite bungalows. The main building has been thoughtfully designed as an octagonal reception area, bar and lounge/dining room with a huge log fire in the middle. The hotel also boasts a curio shop, swimming pool and squash courts. They offer horse riding and forest trekking.

The management is efficient and courteous, and the food delicious. It is situated within its own private reserve, Analamazaotra, ten minutes from Perinet.

Spend two nights at the Vakona Forest Lodge including dinner, bed and breakfast.

Day three

Today you will be driven back to Tana to the Tana Plaza, en route visiting the Peyrieras insect farm.

The Tana Plaza is situated on the Avenue de L’ Independence near the railway station. The hotel boasts a modern bar and an excellent restaurant specializing in French cuisine. Accommodation is provided in small air-conditioned rooms with ensuite facilities. The rooms facing the street are noisy but offer a special sight in the very early hours of the morning.

From about three o’clock, under burning street lights, amid whispered conversations, rural Malagasy can be seen selling their fresh produce. Fruit, flowers, vegetables, fresh meat and fish along with a couple of other odds and ends are all sold or traded. By dawn, the street is clear and no sign of the market can be seen.

Spend one night at Tana Plaza on a bed and breakfast basis.

Day four

This morning you will be transferred to Tana Airport, in time to connect with the Air Madagascar flight to Diego. On arrival you will be met and transferred to Nature Lodge.

Situated an easy forty five minutes drive from Diego Suarez, on the outskirts of the charming village of Joffreville, Nature Lodge provides an ideal base to explore the surrounding Montagne d’Ambre Reserve. Accommodation is provided in twelve spacious bungalows each with ensuite bathroom facilities and a private veranda overlooking the mountains with Diego Bay in the distance. The attractively designed bar and restaurant offers warm, friendly service. Meals are simply delicious with a good selection of fresh ingredients and seafood on offer.

Spend two nights at Nature Lodge on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis.

Day six

Today you will transfer by road to Ankify, in time to connect with a boat transfer to Nosy Be’s, Nosy Tsara Komba Hotel.

Tsara Komba is superb. Situated on the eastern side of Nosy Komba, this six roomed luxury lodge is an ideal getaway for the discerning visitor. Built above its own private beach amongst stunning gardens and wonderful views the hotel is an ideal base from which to explore the island, dive, fish, snorkel or simply relax.

All four rooms and two suites are beautifully spacious boasting ensuite facilities and private verandas overlooking the ocean. The main area consists of a stylish sitting area, bar and restaurant. Owner run and managed, this lodge offers gourmet French cuisine and will be sure to leave a lasting memory.
