DAY 02
Leave the hotel at leisure and drive to Okonjima, a drive of about three hours.
Okonjima’s 22 000 hectare private nature reserve successfully combines luxury safari accommodation with a world famous conservation programme.
Okonjima Main Camp is the original Hanssen family farmhouse, which was reconstructed and upgraded to form a guest lodge in 1992. The camp is nestled in lush gardens and offers six double en-suite rooms and an open fire entertainment area, as well as a boma (gathering place), curio shop, swimming pool and reception area. The lodge has a welcoming home from home ambience.
Okonjima is home of the Africat Foundation, which has received worldwide acclaim for its work in protecting cheetahs and large carnivores in Namibia. Guests are able to venture out tracking these magnificent and endangered cats with expert rangers. Guests can also experience a day in the life of a San Bushman, learning about the art of making traditional artefacts and how the San adapt and survive in an unforgiving wilderness environment. Walking trails of up to eight kilometres are offered to guests who want to experience the beauty and solitude of the Okonjima Wilderness. The overall experience at Okonjima is fascinating for visitors with its emphasis on the protection of large carnivores and the education of rural Namibian communities.
Overnight at Okonjima Main Camp on a full board basis including scheduled activities.
DAY 03
After breakfast and a last game activity, drive up to Ongava on the western side of Etosha – this is also a drive of about three hours.
Ongava Tented Camp is located in the middle of the privately owned thirty five thousand hectare Ongava Reserve that shares a common boundary with the world renowned Etosha National Park. The camp offers five twin bedded tents with en suite facilities and comfortable beds, but sleeps a maximum of only eight guests. The main area is under thatch and houses a dining area and lounge. There is also a small plunge pool in which to cool off. The camp offers a full Etosha experience as well as the opportunity to take night drives and nature walks, which are not permitted inside the park.
Spend two nights at Ongava Tented Camp on a full board basis including scheduled game activities, park fees and selected drinks.
DAY 05 & 6
Leave Ongava after a final game drive and breakfast and travel south west to Damaraland to Mowani, a drive of about four to five (4-5) hours.
Mowani Mountain Camp in Twyfelfontein offers luxury tented accommodation with beautiful desert scenery. The name is taken from the M’wane word meaning "place of God” and here in the peace and tranquillity of the mountains, you find the meaning to be true.
The lodge has been built on a high spot and offers commanding views over the ancient landscape. Much care has been taken in the design of the lodge. The public areas are all under thatch, creating the feeling of an African village and guests are accommodated in East African style tents with elegant interiors, en suite facilities and breathtaking views of the valley.
From the lodge guests have access to many places of interest including the Brandberg Mountain, the rock art at Twyfelfontein and the Petrified Forest. The area is also home to the black rhino and desert elephant among other desert fauna. Walks and nature drives can be booked and settled directly at the lodge.
Spend two nights at Mowani in standard tents on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis.
DAY 07 & 08
Leave Mowani at your leisure and continue to Swakopmund, a drive of about four to five (4- 5) hours. Make your way to the Swakopmund Guesthouse.
Situated in the town centre, a mere five-minute walk from the beach, stands The Swakopmund Guesthouse. Opened in December, it was previously used as a holiday house by the Borg family who continue to run it now. Charming and restful, the house has been completely revamped to offer four standard rooms, seven luxury rooms and one family suite. All rooms come complete with en-suite bathroom, mini-bar and television.
The Swakopmund Guesthouse is ideal for guests wanting to indulge in a comfortable stay-over close to the ocean. Its fresh inviting décor oozes a holiday feel, with rough textures such as pebbles and driftwood reflecting the outside seascape. Rates include a full breakfast buffet, and facilities include a minibar and television in the rooms, as well as a useful shuttle service. The guesthouse is run along eco-friendly lines, making use of solar-energy and recycled water.
Swakopmund was founded in 1892 during the period of German colonial rule and served as the territory's main harbour for many years. Today it is much loved for its old-world charm and relaxed atmosphere, with lush green lawns, palm trees and colourful public gardens enhancing the desert surroundings. Swakopmund has several excellent restaurants, pubs, discos and nightclubs and is well known for its jewellery, which ranges from contemporary African pieces to continental designs. Swakopmund’s golf course in its desert setting has been described as one of the best in southern Africa.
Spend two nights at the Swakopmund Guesthouse on a bed and breakfast basis.
There is a great deal to see and do in Swakopmund including quad-biking, horse riding, sand-boarding, boat trips, desert trips, 4x4 trips to Sandwich Harbour, seal and dolphin watching trips etc.
DAY 09
Drop your vehicle off at the airport and continue south by light aircraft to Sossusvlei Lodge. The flight will take about an hour and a half across the 500 kilometre dune belt and part of the coastal area where you may see the remains of wrecked ships.
Please note that all scheduled and private charter transfers are in small, light aircraft that seat as few as four passengers.
Sossusvlei Lodge is nestled in a small valley in the Namib Desert close to the gate of The Namib Naukluft National Park, home to the awe inspiring dunes at Sossusvlei. Accommodation is in basic en suite tented bungalows that are painted in earthy hues, harmonising with their surroundings; some light blue, some ochre, and some orange. All rooms all have a small private veranda - wonderful in the summer evenings and for sunrises and sunsets. The central reception area houses a bar, swimming pool, dining room, barbecue boma and a tour desk. There is a waterhole in front of the property that is shaded during the day and lit by a small floodlight in the evenings.
As the lodge is close to the park gates it is relatively simple for guests wishing to be on the dunes as the sun rises to be in position. Lunch at the lodge is included.
Spend two nights at Sossusvlei Lodge on a full board basis including a morning trip to the dunes and Dead Vlei.
DAY 10 & 11
Depart on a pre-dawn trip to Sossusvlei and then to Dead Vlei. Sossusvlei is a clay pan created by a river that flows through the Namib Desert every five to ten years. It is famous for the spectacular high, red sand dunes which surround it, part of a major sand sea. The river does not reach the Atlantic Ocean, but drains away between the dunes of Sossusvlei. Vegetation, such as camelthorn trees, is watered by infrequent floods of the Tsauchab River, which slowly soak into the underlying clay. One local meaning of Sossus means 'place of no return' and the word vlei is an Afrikaans word for 'marsh.' Sossusvlei itself is in the small valley and is one of four clay pans in the area; the others being The Dead Vlei, Hidden Vlei and Nara Vlei.
The dunes at Sossusvlei are said to be the highest in the world, some reaching up to 500m and the dune belt reaches in a vast sea of sand from Sesriem down to the coast. The dunes are at their most beautiful at dawn as the changing light moves across them, casting long shadows and changing the colour of the sand from deep purple to bright gold.
After the dune trip, return to the lodge for breakfast after which you will be met and transferred through changing scenery to Wolwedans. Here you will check in at the main reception area and then be transferred across to Dune Camp.
Positioned on the edge of a 250 metre high dune, Dune Camp sleeps a maximum of twelve guests in a totally unspoilt setting. Guests stay in comfortable tents, which are pitched on wooden platforms. A spacious deck, allowing for safe sleep-outs under the stars and a private bathroom make for a rather civilized camping experience. The lapa comprises a lounge, dining area and an open-plan kitchen, allowing for guests to chat to the chef while he prepares a sumptuous dinner. The sundowner deck with its fireplace is the central meeting point of the camp, making for a cosy and relaxed ambience.
Whilst the lodge aims at accommodating those guests in need of relaxed comfort and space, the camp provides a more down-to-earth experience. Its rustic but unique atmosphere courts the young and more adventurous traveller.
The charm of the camp lies in its tranquil, intimate atmosphere, capturing the romance of a bygone era. Dune Camp requires a minimum stay of two nights and a day safari with picnic lunch en route is part of the package.
Spend two nights at Wolwedans Dunes Camp on a full board basis including all activities and selected drinks.
DAY 12
