The areas covered in the remote North West part of the Kafue National Park include the Kafue & Lunga river areas, the Lafupa River and the gem of the Kafue, the Busanga Plains. Highlights from a big game perspective include all the big cats, elephant, sable and roan. On the birding front, the change in habitat over the six night period ensures the widest variety of birds the Kafue has to offer. In terms of activities, the Kafue mobile has it all from day & night drives, boating, canoeing and walking – a great adventure!

SATURDAY - TRANSFER TO CAMP 1
Transfer Option 1 – A four to five hour road transfer from Lusaka.
A company representative will collect guests from Lusaka (the airport or a hotel) and transfer them by road to Camp 1. This drive will travel through downtown Lusaka and out on the western highway. After two hours, we will arrive at the outback town of Mumbwa and then it’s another two hours on a very scenic bush road to Camp 1.

Transfer Option 2 – A one hour flight from Lusaka and a 40 minute road transfer
We will charter a plane on behalf of our guests from Lusaka International Airport to Hippo bush strip in the National Park. From here it is a 40 minute drive to Camp 1.

Transfer Option 3 – An air charter or road transfer from another lodge in Zambia
A road or air transfer from one of the lodges or camps in the Luangwa or elsewhere will be arranged.

All road transfers are conducted in closed Land Rovers with air conditioning. There will be cold drinks and a packed lunch provided (if guests are not going to make lunch at camp) as well as tea and coffee.

Camp 1 is at the confluence of the Kafue and Lunga Rivers inside the Kafue National Park. There is a large hill called ‘Kafue Tops’ with spectacular views across the Kafue National Park. Guests will normally arrive around lunch time. If so, guests will have lunch (if they have not had a packed lunch en route) and then relax and freshen up during the afternoon ‘siesta’ time. After afternoon tea, guests will have the option to either do a game drive, go boating or go for a walk followed by sundowners on the river. Then back to camp for showers, dinner and drinks around the fire.

SUNDAY - THE KAFUE RIVER, HOT SPRINGS & KAFUE ‘TOPS’
The Kafue is a rocky, crystal clear river. Guests will leave camp early in the morning in the open topped game viewer and do a game drive for an hour upstream. Then we’ll get into the canoes or boat and spend the rest of the morning on the Kafue river game viewing, bird watching, swimming and relaxing. Through this stretch of the Kafue, the river meanders through a series of islands providing some spectacular scenery. In the evening, we can take a walk to the Labunga hot springs just upstream from camp followed by sundowners at the summit of Kafue Tops.

MONDAY - EXPLORING THE LUNGA RIVER & MOVING TO CAMP 2
Guests will set out on a morning game drive that follows the Lunga River upstream and into country which is completely different to the previous day, where the higher rainfall has resulted in ‘cathedral’ Brachystegia woodland. Guests will drive to the Lunga rapids and go for a morning walk along the river. After the walk there will be a large bush brunch next to the river. Post brunch, guests will be transferred to Camp 2 on the Lafupa River which has been set up throughout the morning. This is a two hour transfer from the Lunga area and is a game drive through the park. Guests will have more than enough time to chill out and relax before the evening drive, sundowners and a night drive. The Lafupa river area is prime leopard country and it is well worth putting time and effort into the night drives in this region.

TUESDAY – DISCOVER THE LAFUPA
The Lafupa, one of the rivers which drains the Busanga, is muddy, dirty and full of massive crocs and hippos. Activities from Camp 2 can be a mix of drives or walks depending on what the clients fancy – this is good game viewing country by foot or from vehicles. They can even try their hand at fishing for cat fish from the murky depths! There are also a series of interesting hot springs in this area which are well worth a visit.

WEDNESDAY – GAME DRIVE UP TO THE BUSANGA PLAINS & CAMP 3
Guests will go on a morning game drive following the Lafupa River up to the Big Fig Tree on the Busanga Plains. We will have a packed lunch out on the plains and then move to the new Camp 3 set amongst the trees overlooking the plains. This is home for the next two nights. The afternoon will either be a walk or drive followed by a night drive tracking down the prides of tree climbing lions that call the Busanga home. Dinner will be under the stars.

THURSDAY – WAKE UP ON THE PLAINS
Guest will wake up and witness the vastness of the plains before them. This will be a day of game drives exploring the full extent of the plains driving as far as we can towards the lechwe & buffalo filled swamps to the north. The Busanga Plains are the crown jewel of the Kafue.

FRIDAY – TRANSFER DAY
Transfer Option 1. By road. A six to seven hour drive to Lusaka, three hours of which is through the National Park and three to four hours on tarmac.

Transfer Option 2. By charter. A one and a half hour flight to Lusaka from Lafupa or Busanga air strips which are one hours game drive from camp.
