Here are some of our favourite family destinations in South Africa.

 
 

The Cape Grace

Surrounded by water on three sides, The Cape Grace not only enjoys one of Cape Town's most sought after locations, but is renowned for its child-friendliness. It is only minutes away from the city centre and within walking distance of The Waterfront's thriving activity, giving plenty for families to do.

 

MOSAIC FARM

Perched on the edge of the Hermanus Lagoon, Mosaic Farm has access to a secluded part of Walker Bay, the best place in the world for whale watching (between May and October). It is wonderful for families, with 933 hectares and four km of lagoon frontage waiting to be explored. Guides supervise a range of activities, from whale watching, to kayaking, hiking, 4 x 4 beach trips and quad bike tours.

 

Kurland Hotel

Kurland Hotel nestles amidst emerald green pastures where the Outeniqua Mountains sweep down to the Indian Ocean, and is ideally located close to the stunning beaches of Plettenberg Bay. Whilst luxurious and exclusive, Kurland welcomes children of all ages with child minders, a spacious playroom and a children's programme on offer.

 

River Bend Lodge

River Bend Lodge is situated inside a 17000 ha private concession area of the Addo Elephant National Park. You can watch herds of elephants feeding,  enjoy a personalized game drive into the mountains and explore open savannah plains and hillsides rich in fynbos.Children are made exceptionally welcome with children's activities on offer and a well stocked playroom.

 

Samara 

Covering 28,000 hectares of breathtaking Karoo landscape, Samara provides a wonderful wilderness experience. Children are made very welcome and will enjoy learning about the exciting cheetah reintroduction programme here.

 

Tswalu

Located in the remote Northern Cape, Tswalu is the largest singly owned private game reserve in South Africa, covering 96 000 hectares. Rich in culture, this area is the historic home of the Bushman and boasts over seventy species of mammals, including black rhino.

 

Londolozi

Set in the world famous Sabi Sands Game Reserve, Londolozi offers families a unique wildlife experience. The Varty family's concern for "treading lightly" is evident with the focus on expert interpretation of the wild and respect for the environment. Daily game drives in open 4x4 vehicles and bush walks with rangers and trackers give you the opportunity to view the Big Five animals, including the famous leopards of Londolozi.

 

Camp Jabulani

Camp Jabulani offers the first elephant experience of its kind in South Africa.  Situated on the private Kapama Reserve, Jabulani enables you to enjoy close up experiences with twelve resident elephants. Walks on or with the elephants will give you and your family a whole new insight into game viewing. 

 

Ant's Nest

Ant's Nest is Ant and Tessa Baber's unique bush home situated on a private game reserve in the Waterberg region. Special activities are laid on for children, whilst teenagers can enjoy getting involved in the running of a game reserve if they wish. Ant's Nest offers wonderful ponies for both the novice and experienced child rider. Beginners are led by a competent guide and riding lessons are available.

 

Rocktail Beach

Rocktail Beach Camp is located on the spectacular and unspoilt KwaZulu Natal north coast. This is the place to go if your family is interested in scuba diving, however much of a beginner you are, with full Discover Scuba and Open Water courses on offer. Diving is conducted within a World Heritage Site along unspoiled reefs and you will have the luxury of knowing that you are the only underwater visitors along this stretch of the coastline.

 

Phinda Forest

Situated within the beautiful Phinda Private Game Reserve, this unique glass clad lodge is suspended in an ancient sand forest under towering torchwood trees.  Forest Lodge offers a range of activities to choose from include Big Five game viewing, boat cruises, walking safaris, rhino tracking, canoeing and excursions to nearby unspoilt beaches.
