Cradled against ancient mountains, Sossusvlei Mountain Lodge's décor embraces muted hues of ochre, amber and ivory. The split level main lodge is a dramatic structure of glass and stone curves. Walls become windows that fold away completely, revealing the vast desert vistas while the swimming pool is fed by an underground spring that emerges from deep within the desert. There is something deliciously contradictory about floating in a pool in the middle of the world's oldest desert!

Ten stone and glass suites combine unprecedented sophistication with the stark beauty of the desert landscape. The air-conditioned and spacious rooms are designed to capture the splendour and solitude of the desert. Spaced well apart, each suite is a private haven with a shaded deck overlooking the far horizons of the Namib Desert.

In the cool of mornings and evenings, resident naturalists will take you in four wheel drive open vehicles to explore the open grass plains, fossilised sand dunes and orange sand dune belts of the Namib Rand Nature Reserve.

For stargazers, the crisp, dry desert air provides unrivalled opportunities to be mesmerised by the Milky Way. Tribute to its prime position is Sossusvlei Mountain Lodge's own observatory, housing the most powerful electronic telescope in Namibia outside the National Observatory. Knowledgeable field guides will direct you through the southern skies and tell you about the expanding cosmos.

A fine selection of wines from the walk-in wine cellar compliments delicious Pan-African cuisine, which is served in the glass-fronted dining room. The split-level main lodge features a fire-lit bar, comfortable sitting room, mezzanine library with CD and book collection, swimming pool, wraparound verandas and African gift shop. The pool is fed by water from an underground spring. At sunset, animals are drawn to a nearby waterhole, providing added enjoyment to a sundowner drink. Sossusvlei is renowned for its exciting bush breakfasts and dinners in dramatic desert locations.

Unique desert safaris: Sossusvlei offers a range of exhilarating activities including scenic game drives in open 4x4 vehicles in the Namib Rand Nature Reserve, quad-biking through the desert, exploring beautiful surrounds by guided and marked walking trails and stargazing.

Picnic excursions to the famous Sossusvlei sand dunes – the highest in the world – and Sesriem Canyon, scenic flights and hot air balloon trips are available at an additional cost.
