Three Tree Hill Lodge - Natal Midlands - KwaZulu Natal - Interior - South Africa
Previous owners Andrew Ardington, and the late David Rattray (world-renowned Anglo-Zulu War historian and owner of Fugitives Drift Lodge) had a vision for Three Tree Hill Lodge similar to that which David had for Fugitives Drift: bringing to vivid life the struggle between one of the largest empires in history and one of the smallest nations in the world. Proprietors Simon and Cheryl Blackburn, both highly experienced safari guides, share and continue with this vision.
Three Tree Hill Lodge is across a small valley from the location of the epic Battle of Spioenkop where part of the history of the Anglo-Boer War unfolds itself in a dramatic and secluded environment. Wood and iron have been used in the construction of the lodge to recreate the appearance of the housing kits that were brought out from Britain in the nineteenth century.
Each of the six twin cottages has its own bath, shower and veranda with magnificent views of Spioenkop (even from the bath). The décor harks back to an era of colonialism, with an understated elegance that is permeates the lodge. Three meals a day, teas and coffees are included. Weather permitting; these are served on the verandas of the main lodge. A viewing deck, pool, library and wonderful walks and horse riding complete this beautiful and historical destination.
The lodge adjoins the Spioenkop Nature Reserve where plains game and birds abound in a varying habitat that is dominated by the striking aloe spectabilis and paperback acacia.
