Three Tree Hill Lodge is tucked into the secluded Mfazimnyama Valley near Bergville in KwaZulu Natal. It has the magnificent Drakensberg Mountains as a backdrop and overlooks Spioenkop Hill, the site of a key battle in the Anglo-Boer War.
The lodge is just a mile away from the actual site of the British camp and wood and iron have been used in the construction of the lodge to recreate the appearance of the housing kits that were brought out from Britain in the nineteenth century.
While the lodge was built with the history of the Battle of Spioenkop as a central theme, owner-managers Cheryl and Simon Blackburn have transformed it into a relaxed getaway with a diversity of things to see and do. They are both qualified bush and mountain guides; Cheryl is an accomplished equestrienne and Simon a storyteller par excellence.
The lodge has six rooms, as well as a family suite comprising two bedrooms and a two bedroom villa. Each of the six cottages has its own bath, shower and veranda with magnificent views of Spioenkop (even from the bath!). The family suite has a full en suite bathroom off the master bedroom and a loo and basin off the children’s room.
Churchills is a beautiful stand-alone cottage-style villa with a spacious open plan kitchen and lounge, and double glass doors offer sweeping views of the Spioenkop Game Reserve. A large deck overlooks the private pool, braai and entertainment area below. The living space has a modern kitchen suitable for guests wishing to prepare their own meals. Churchills has two bedrooms, each with their own en-suite bathroom. One room has twin extra length single beds and the second has an extra length queen size bed. Churchills is ideal for honeymooners, families with teenagers or two couples travelling together.
The décor throughout the lodge harks back to an era of colonialism, with an understated elegance that permeates the lodge. Three meals a day, teas and coffees are included and, weather permitting, these are served on the verandas of the main lodge. A viewing deck, pool, library and wonderful walks and horse riding complete this beautiful and historical destination.
The lodge adjoins the Spioenkop Nature Reserve where plains game and birds abound in a varying habitat that is dominated by the striking aloe spectabilis and paperback acacia.
In addition to walks and mountain biking on the property that are included when staying at Three Tree Hill Lodge, guests can now also take guided battlefield tours, go horse riding, head into the mountains with or without a guide or head into the Spioenkop Game Reserve on a guided walk. Other historical places of interest that are nearby include The Siege Museum in Ladysmith and the site of the capture of Churchill near Frere. There are number of other activities within an hours’ drive of Three Tree Hill including hot air ballooning, white water rafting (Nov-May), Zipling, San rock art, quad biking, archery, reptile and raptor centre and hot air ballooning. For guests wanting to be quite adventurous, a hike with Simon or Cheryl to climb the chain-ladder in the Drakensberg is an option too!
