As the largest reserve in Africa at 55,000 sq/km, Selous can justifiably claim to offer unparalleled wilderness. Located in southern Tanzania, it is home to the largest populations of some of Africa's most sought after game including elephant, lion, wild dog, leopard, buffalo, hippo, crocodile and herds of plains game, yet it remains one of the least visited of the great game sanctuaries on the continent.
Accommodation is in African styled, canvas dome tents, all fully insect proof. Cooking is undertaken on an open fire and bush cuisine comes as a pleasant surprise for those used to microwaves and modern kitchen facilities. An evening spent around the campfire under the vast night sky is the quintessential African experience as you listen to the nocturnal sounds of the bush comes alive.
Where toilet and shower facilities are not provided in the campsites, water for a bucket shower and toilet are taken along.
Private campsites inside the national parks and reserves are preferred – these offer exclusivity and the camps are set in the best locations to follow animal migration patterns as the season changes.
