Serian Camp - Masai Mara Game Reserve - Kenya - The Masai Mara
Serian (meaning "peaceful, calm or serene" in the Maa language of the Masai people) is the charismatic bush home of Alex Walker, filmmaker and guide. Alex has created an exclusive wilderness camp set in a secluded valley on the Mara River in the Masaai Mara. The eight private marquee tents are set in the shade of large walburgia trees that cover the site; a tranquil setting that borders one of the finest game reserves in the world. The camp operates from June until the end of February.
Arriving by air, clients land at Musiara airstrip a half hours drive away, whilst those driving into camp alight on the hillside car park and walk down a cut grass pathway to the mess. This opens onto expansive views of the Mara River and the Olololo Escarpment, a ridge that defines the western edge of the Masai Mara National Park.
Each tent is furnished in rich warm textures mixed with natural hard woods and is constructed of canvas and supported by hardwood poles with the interior walls and ceilings made from Kenyan canvas.
The bedroom area is fitted with a king-size bed flanked by twin writing desks. The bathroom area, which is adjacent to the main tent, includes a shower, twin basins, bush bath tub and flush toilet. Hanging swathes of cotton and canvas walls provide complete privacy, whilst furniture is minimal and unobtrusive, mimicking the traditional safari camps of an earlier time.
Meals are often served in different locations throughout the camp and dinner is often concluded around a roaring outdoor fire that serves as a focal point in colder evenings.
The mess is furnished with large comfortable sofas, day beds, reading tables and chairs.
The library provides a wide collection of coffee-table books on the national park, the game, the history and culture of the Masai, as well as on other aspects of East African culture and history.
The experience at Serian is focused on viewing wildlife, in particular, the big five.In keeping with atmosphere of a traditional safari camp, Serian does not have electricity, rather romantic paraffin lamps and candles provide light. Meals in camp will be interspersed with picnics out in the bush. There are no schedules to be met and you are free to make your own timetable on a daily basis. For the keen ornithologist there are four hundred and fifty three recorded bird species in the Mara, fifty-three of which are raptors. Conception of the wide-open spaces and the traditional Masai culture are eye-openers for first time travellers.
