The Tides - Pangani - Dar es Salaam & Coast - Tanzania
Pangani is a tranquil village located about 50km south of Tanga on the north east coast of Tanzania. The history of Pangani dates from 975 AD when it was an important stopover for the Arab dhows on the East African trade route. In later years both the Germans and British added their own distinctive touches to the architecture of the village that also became a terminus of the caravan and slave route from Lake Tanganyika.
The beaches near Pangani are beautiful with long clean stretches of sand offering none of the hassle, which can be expected in Zanzibar, and the area is a good start or end point to any safari. Currently Pangani has not attracted the mass tourism hordes so is a great place to find peace and solitude on deserted Indian Ocean palm fringed beaches.
The Tides Lodge south of Pangani offers the most luxurious accommodation in the region and a variety of activities can be organised from the lodge including deep-sea fishing, local fishing, snorkelling trips to Maziwe Island Marine Park, as well as excursions to the nearby Amani Nature Reserve and Saadani National Park.
Located on a beautiful stretch of beach about sixteen kilometres south of Pangani, this small, relaxed lodge offers just seven spacious and individually styled beachfront cottages and two suites tastefully decorated with local furnishings.
The Tides offers some of the finest seafood cuisine on the coast of Tanzania that is served in the beachfront restaurant and bar. The deserted white sand beach stretches into the distance and the clean water is good for swimming.
The lodge operates an 18ft fishing boat capable of carrying four people. It is equipped with GPS and a fish finding device, and can put out four lines. The skipper is experienced in these waters and can speak English, German and Kiswahili. The fishing can be very good and typical catches include giant trevally, wahoo, kingfish, Dorado, barracuda, yellow fin tuna, sailfish and marlin, depending on the season.
Snorkelling trips are organised to Maziwe Island Marine Park, which is a sand bank offshore surrounded by coral and marine life. Trips can only take place at low tide. Guests have the opportunity to snorkel in shallow water therefore it is suitable for those less experienced at snorkelling. All equipment is provided and dolphins can often be seen from the boat.
