Fianarantsoa is one of the more attractive Malagasy towns. Built on a hill there is quite a contrast between the dreary Lower Town and the charming Upper Town. The Upper Town with its narrow winding streets and plethora of churches should be visited for the wonderful views, especially in the early morning when the mist is curling up from the valley. For over a decade the Tsara Guest House has been the most popular hotel in Madagascar. It is located in an old house that began its life as a church. It boasts a terrace from which you have a wonderful view of the town. The owners, Jim and Natalie, work hard at providing all the comforts and atmosphere that traveller’s desire, including an excellent restaurant. The more expensive en-suite rooms offer beautiful views over the rice paddies.
