Entebbe is situated on the shores of Lake Victoria, about 30 km from the capital city, Kampala that was until 1962 the administrative capital of the country. Very quiet compared with bustling Kampala, it is a rather pretty town, built on a number of small hills that slope down to the shores of the lake.

It supports a large number of plants and animals endemic to the region, but most notably half of the world's population of Mountain gorillas.
