ITINERARY

Day One:

Depart London early morning for Amsterdam where you will connect with a flight to Kilimanjaro. On arrival here, you are met by your private safari guide and after a short briefing you will make your way with your guide to Tarangire National Park, for the start of your African Adventure.

Tarangire National Park, one of Tanzania’s smaller parks, is situated not far from the southern tip of Lake Manyara. The park is dissected by the Tarangire River and is probably best known for its large population of baobab and beautiful palm trees.   The park is at its best in the dry season from June to October when the game, especially large herds of elephant, come from the neighbouring areas for water. Tarangire is home to the vast Larmakau Swamp where you will find, amongst other things, a huge variety of birdlife. Leopard are also plentiful in the park and all the major game is to be found here.

The aim of this camp is to be able to access remote areas in the easiest and most cost effective manner whilst still giving guests a high level of comfort. The camp is designed to be one of the most environmentally friendly camps operating in Tanzania today and is designed to fit on a small trailer towed behind the client safari vehicle. Tents are dome tents that are easy to set up with adequate space for two people. Toilets are shallow pit latrines and the showers are bucket showers. All meals are taken under the stars; however a mess tent is erected in case of bad weather.

Meals are excellent as most are prepared in advance thus allowing for more elaborate dishes. Cold drinks, beers and a small wine selection are available.

The focus of these private camps is on the wildlife experience and time is spent in private concession areas as well national parks. The advantage of private concession areas is that guests are not bound by national park rules allowing more freedom to enjoy activities outside of the vehicles.

Spend three nights camping in Tarangire National Park with Wayo Africa in twin bedded tents, includes all meals, local brand drinks and activities with your private safari guide.

Day four:

This morning after breakfast you will start making your way to the Ngorongoro Highlands. Along the way you will enjoy a game drive in Lake Manyara National Park with a picnic lunch.

One of the smaller national parks, Manyara contains a large variety of landscapes; the rift wall, ground water forest, acacia woodland, open grassland, marshes and the lake’s foreshore. This varied habitat provides optimum conditions for a wide variety of wildlife, each of them exploiting separate parts of the area. Added to this, some four hundred species of birds have been recorded in the park.

Plantation Lodge is a small and comfortable lodge set at the foot of the Ngorongoro Highland Forest Reserve, less than an hour from both the crater rim and Lake Manyara.  It is set within its own farm, first established in 1927 and nowadays producing coffee and flower seeds as well as traditional corn crops and vegetables for the lodge.  The twenty two rooms are individually designed within a variety of different cottages in the beautiful gardens. Frangipani, jacaranda and wide variety of trees dominate the gardens whilst various livestock wanders around. All rooms have ensuite shower rooms and comfortable beds with mosquito nets and are filled with a wealth of local Tanzanian watercolours and artwork. The food must rate amongst the best in Tanzania, using vegetable and dairy produce brought fresh from the farm and meals are often served outside your room.

There is a swimming pool with a good sized sitting out area, overlooking the surrounding farmland as well as a tennis court. There are also plenty of superb walking opportunities on the farm and along the forest edge.

Spend two nights at Plantation Lodge in a twin bedded room with en-suite facilities. Your stay includes dinner and breakfast.

Day Five:

Today you will leave the lodge in the early morning for a game drive in Ngorongoro Crater, enjoying a picnic lunch in the park.

Day Six:

After breakfast you depart Plantation Lodge and make your way to the Serengeti where you will spend the next three nights exploring this amazing area of Tanzania.

Serengeti National Park is undoubtedly the best-known wildlife sanctuary in the world, unequalled for its natural beauty and scientific value. With more than two million wildebeest, half a million Thomson's gazelle, and a quarter of a million zebra, it has the greatest concentration of plains game in Africa. The wildebeest and zebra moreover form the star cast of a unique spectacular - the annual Serengeti migration.

The name 'Serengeti' comes from the Maasai language and appropriately means an 'extended place'. The National Park is as big as Northern Ireland, but its ecosystem, which includes the Ngorongoro Conservation Area amongst others, is roughly the size of Kuwait.

A unique combination of diverse habitats enables it to support more than thirty  species of large herbivores and nearly five hundred species of birds. Its landscape, originally formed by volcanic activity, has been sculptured by the concerted action of wind, rain and sun. It now varies from open grass plains in the south, savannah with scattered acacia trees in the centre, hilly, wooded grassland in the north, to extensive woodland and black clay plains to the west. Small rivers, lakes and swamps are scattered throughout and each area has its own particular atmosphere and wildlife.

The Serengeti's climate is usually warm and dry. The main rainy season is from March to May, with short rains falling from October to November. It is coldest from June to October, particularly in the evenings.

In the open grass plains during the rainy months from November to May hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra congregate. The area is the starting point for one of the great wonders of the world: the Serengeti annual migration. Towards the end of May when the grass becomes dry and exhausted, the wildebeest start to mass in huge armies. All is far from peaceful, for it is the rutting season and each male tries to establish a stamping ground. Eventually the animals begin their trek in a column several miles long to the permanent waters in the north of the park.

In November, when the grazing is finished in the north, this army of animals surges back to the now green pastures of the south, where they calve and mate before starting the entire cycle again.

Spend three nights camping in the Serengeti with Wayo Africa. Your stay includes all meals, local brand drinks and game drives in the Serengeti. The location of the camp will depend on the time of year you are travelling and the movements of the wildebeest.

Day Nine:

This morning after breakfast you will enjoy some game viewing along the way to the airstrip. Bid a fond farewell to your guide before you depart by light aircraft charter flight back to Arusha, on arrival at Arusha Airport you will be met and transferred by road to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your return flight to UK via Amsterdam.
